A Documentary on Yexiangquan Drinking Water Company’s Plant Struggling to Maintain Production Amid a Power Outage — Heavy Workload Compounded by a Prolonged Blackout, Yet Determined Efforts Keep Production Moving
For more than two months, Xishuangbanna has experienced a prolonged rainless spell accompanied by persistently high temperatures, pushing the water plant of our drinking-water company into a peak-demand period with daily consumption approaching 8,000 barrels. To make matters worse, the plant was caught in the middle of a major upgrade to the Southern Power Grid’s main feeder line serving the Dadugang Township area, resulting in a power outage from 8:00 on March 20 to 18:00 on March 24. During this time, the plant had no choice but to rely on its backup generator to keep production running. Throughout the outage, a series of challenges arose: insufficient generator output voltage; inadequate air pressure in the air compressor; excessive generator body temperature; the generator’s inability to support simultaneous production and water pumping; blockage in the generator’s fuel system that prevented power supply; shift workers being unable to operate during the day and forced to work at night; and the commissioning of new production lines interfering with the operation of existing lines. Although the power outage lasted only five days, the problems kept coming one after another.

After several days of strenuous effort, several key lessons have been learned: First, the plant’s leadership has remained firmly in place and fully engaged, ensuring a high degree of ideological unity across the entire workforce. Plant Director Li Zhongwei has consistently been on the front lines, personally overseeing and coordinating operations, which has fostered unanimous support among all employees. Everyone has pooled their efforts and worked tirelessly, putting the production targets above personal considerations of hardship or reward. Second, strict quality control has been maintained. Although full, normal production has not been possible at times, the plant has nonetheless placed the highest priority on product quality, resolutely preventing any substandard items from leaving the facility. Third, comprehensive service and support have been provided. The plant’s leadership has ensured timely advance planning for the diesel fuel required by the generators and has made every effort to secure the necessary equipment and materials. In addition to standard daily provisions, free evening meals are now offered to workers who stay late, demonstrating genuine care and concern. At the same time, several areas for improvement have become apparent: with the planned expansion of the production line, if similar challenges arise again, the existing power-generation equipment will fall far short of demand, necessitating the procurement of an additional 300-kilowatt generator. Furthermore, training and skill development for the current maintenance personnel must be further strengthened. (Text and photos by Wang Li)
