In memory of our fellow countrymen who perished in the August 3 earthquake in Ludian, Yunnan Province, and in response to an announcement by the Yunnan Provincial Government, at 10:00 a.m. on August 10, employees of the Xishuangbanna Petrochemical Group spontaneously gathered to observe a three-minute moment of silence for the victims of the Zhaotong–Ludian earthquake, as air-raid sirens sounded across the province.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Ludian County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province at 16:30 on August 3, with the epicenter located at 27.1°N latitude and 103.3°E longitude and a focal depth of 12 kilometers.

According to a report by People’s Daily, relevant authorities have identified four key characteristics of this earthquake: first, its magnitude was relatively large—marking the first earthquake in Yunnan Province with a magnitude of 6.5 or higher in the past 2,000 years; second, the quake had a shallow focus, with a hypocentral depth of only 12 kilometers, classifying it as a shallow-focus earthquake; third, the affected area is densely populated, with a population density of 265 people per square kilometer; and fourth, the buildings in the disaster zone exhibit poor seismic resistance.
