“Ignite!” With that cry, a cluster of blue flames leapt into the hearth of the bronze wok used for fixing Pu’er tea. After carefully tempering the heat, stir-frying, stopping the oxidation, and gently warming the leaves, Zebai, a tea farmer from Jino Mountain, finally produced his first batch of large-tree Pu’er tea fixed using clean-energy liquefied petroleum gas. Experts from the Provincial Pu’er Tea Research Institute heaped praise on the use of clean energy for fixation, noting: “Replacing traditional wood-fired fixation with clean energy plays a crucial role in protecting Xishuangbanna’s tropical rainforest and contributes to the region’s ecological civilization, which is highly commendable. Moreover, Pu’er tea fixed with clean energy is indistinguishable from traditionally wood-fired tea in terms of color and aroma; if there is any difference, it is that the process no longer involves the unpleasant smoke and scorching heat of open-fire drying.”

 

“Protecting the tropical rainforest and preserving our green mountains and clear waters” has always been the guiding principle of Xishuangbanna Petrochemical Group, and the company has been committed to this goal since its inception. In March 2015, Chairman Liu Tianwei convened a special meeting and emphasized that safeguarding our green homeland and maintaining our lush mountains and pristine waters must go beyond everyday life; the production and processing sectors must also play an active role. This is both a corporate responsibility and an obligation shared by all employees. The New Energy Development Department of the LPG Division was tasked with conducting thorough research into the fuels used in Pu’er tea processing and promptly developing a comprehensive plan for transitioning to clean energy in this sector. The department was also directed to establish pilot projects across the prefecture to promote the use of clean energy, thereby making a greater contribution to the protection of the tropical rainforest and the building of an ecological civilization.

 

In accordance with the spirit of the special meeting convened by the Group, the New Energy Development Department under the Liquefied Gas Division, with strong support from all branch companies, conducted field visits and surveys over a period of more than 40 days, during which it compiled and collated detailed data on the fuels used in Pu’er tea processing. The scenes encountered at each location were truly shocking and underscored our unwavering commitment to protecting the tropical rainforest.

 

 

 

 

After careful study and analysis of the collected data, and in alignment with the production requirements for Xishuangbanna Pu’er tea, we ultimately decided to introduce a batch of withering equipment that meets local tea farmers’ needs, does not alter existing Pu’er tea-processing techniques, and is environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Furthermore, in response to farmers’ requests, we independently developed a copper-kettle withering burner that is easy to install and simple to operate, which has been warmly embraced by tea growers.

 

On May 18, 2015, coinciding with the annual Pu’er tea production and processing technology training session in Jinuo Township, Zebai Village—the pilot site for promoting clean energy—welcomed its first group of visiting tea farmers and tea traders. Upon seeing the new, convenient, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient withering burner, the farmers were thrilled and eagerly sought detailed information from the staff on hand.

 

 

 

 

The promotion of clean energy is a large-scale, systematic undertaking that not only carries significant social responsibility but also directly affects the people’s livelihood. After two months of preparation and concerted effort, the pilot construction in the first phase—covering two counties and one city—has been essentially completed. While the second phase of rollout still has a long way to go, the commitment of the people at Banna Petrochemical to protecting the tropical rainforest and building a better home remains unwavering; likewise, their dedication to fulfilling social responsibility and delivering benefits to the public will never waver.
