Fully promote the use of clean energy, bid farewell to the “fire pit” era, and preserve our green mountains and clear waters.
“Smoke billows from every household’s chimney, and firewood is piled up in front of every door.” This was once a true depiction of the scene in Yanuo Village, Xinsi Tu Village Committee, Jino Township, Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna Prefecture, during the tea-frying season—when tea factories of all sizes relied on firewood for fuel.
In recent years, the tea industry in Jinuo Township has grown rapidly, becoming an important avenue for increasing farmers’ incomes. However, tea processing still relies primarily on firewood as an energy source, leading to indiscriminate logging that undermines soil and water conservation and hinders forestry ecological development.

Protect forest resources and build beautiful countryside.
On October 26, the “On-Site Promotion Meeting on Replacing Firewood with Liquefied Petroleum Gas in Rural Tea Production in Xishuangbanna Prefecture” was held in Yanuo Village, Jino Township, Jinghong City. Chen Yuhou, Secretary of the CPC Xishuangbanna Prefectural Committee, led members of the Prefectural Party Committee and the Prefectural Government, as well as the principal leaders of the Party and government of Jinghong City, Menghai County, and Mengla County, together with the heads of key departments such as agriculture, environmental protection, and science and technology, to carefully observe how local villagers in Jino Village use traditional wood-fired pan-firing, liquefied-gas burner pan-firing, and liquefied-gas drum-type pan-firing machines. Following the field visit, a symposium was convened to thoroughly hear the views and suggestions of the participating leaders and local villagers. One local tea farmer told Secretary Chen that replacing the traditional wood-fired pan-firing stove with a liquefied-gas drum-type pan-firing machine is simple and convenient, clean and hygienic, and significantly reduces labor input. Moreover, the frying process is now automatically controlled, making it easier to maintain the desired heat level, resulting in more uniform and stable color and flavor in the tea leaves and a marked improvement in the quality of the processed tea. This shift from traditional charcoal-based tea production to low-carbon, eco-friendly, clean-energy tea processing not only protects the ecological environment but also elevates the standard of tea processing, earning widespread approval among local residents.
After hearing remarks from local villagers and leading officials, Secretary Chen Yuhou stated that the promotion of clean energy requires the support of new technologies. Going forward, relevant enterprises and technical departments must enhance follow-up services for the public, upgrade equipment to reduce production and living costs, and intensify technical training for residents. On the basis of carefully soliciting public opinions and suggestions, tailoring approaches to local conditions, and conducting scientific planning, the three counties and cities should launch pilot projects for the promotion of clean energy in Dali, using these pilot initiatives to drive broader implementation. This will help further transform the traditional, underdeveloped modes of production and daily life in certain areas of Xishuangbanna Prefecture, protect forest resources, build beautiful countryside, and safeguard Xishuangbanna’s precious green mountains and clear waters.

On-site meeting
Liu Tianwei, Chairman of the Xishuangbanna Petrochemical Group, stated that the rotary withering machines installed in villagers’ homes were developed and refined by the Group itself. These machines are characterized by simple operation, convenience and speed, intelligent functionality, full automation, time savings, labor savings, and reduced manpower requirements. To date, the Xishuangbanna Petrochemical Group has installed six rotary withering machines, more than 20 liquefied petroleum gas burners, and 34 domestic gas stoves in Jinghong City, Menghai County, and Mengla County within Xishuangbanna Prefecture. Liu Tianwei emphasized that the Group is actively and proactively participating in the rural clean-energy project spearheaded by the Prefectural Party Committee and the Prefectural Government, with the aim of transforming the traditional “fire-pit” culture of smoke and open flames among Xishuangbanna’s ethnic minority communities, safeguarding Xishuangbanna as a “green gem,” and ensuring that its mountains remain greener, its waters clearer, its skies bluer, and the lives of local residents even better.

Today, in the deep autumn tea-picking season, the fragrant aroma of tea still lingers far and wide—yet the once “spectacular” sight of curling smoke rising from hearths has long since vanished. Drawing sustenance from the mountains, the Jinuo Township now practices sustainable development on these very mountains, safeguarding the interests of future generations while meeting the needs of contemporary progress.
