In 1979, Chairman Liu Tianwei, riding the powerful tide of reform and opening-up, set out on a remarkable journey of self-reliance with only two yuan in his pocket. He climbed aboard a large truck, braved mountains and rivers, and endured countless hardships to reach the beautiful, mysterious, and bountiful region of Xishuangbanna. During this period, he worked as a porter at a farm’s hydropower station, a temporary rubber-tapper on a plantation, a photographer who traveled from village to village, a small-shop owner, a frog farmer, and a long-haul truck driver. These unconventional experiences exposed him to the full spectrum of life’s joys and sorrows, yet it was precisely these trials and tribulations that forged in him the admirable qualities of pioneering spirit and relentless self-improvement. Through tireless dedication and hard work, he founded Xishuangbanna Petrochemical Group Co., Ltd. in 1993. Over the ensuing 23 years, the company has grown into a leading enterprise with fixed assets of RMB 2 billion and more than 1,000 employees. It has been recognized as a “National Model Worker Unit,” one of the “Top 100 Private Enterprises in Yunnan Province,” and a “Designated Protected Enterprise for the Non-Public Sector in Yunnan Province.” Its business scope spans refined oil import, gas stations, bottled liquefied petroleum gas, piped natural gas, real estate, minerals, forestry operations, and drinking water supply, among other sectors.

While driving the company’s growth and expansion, model worker Liu Tianwei has remained true to his original aspiration and consistently given back to society. Since its founding, the company has donated more than RMB 80 million in cash and in-kind contributions to various sectors of society. On July 7, 2016, Liu Tianwei and his wife, Zhang Yanhong, voluntarily contributed RMB 2 million to establish Xishuangbanna’s first non-public fundraising charitable organization—the Xishuangbanna Tianwei Charity Foundation.

During the live interactive session, students engaged in in-depth, face-to-face discussions and exchanges with Liu Tianwei on topics such as “How college students can identify their career positioning during employment transitions” and “How college students can start businesses and find employment in today’s environment.”

It is reported that Liu Tianwei, a National Model Worker and Chairman of the Board, also serves as the Chairperson of the Xishuangbanna Prefecture Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy. He was invited to participate in the “National Series of 100 Lectures on Cultivating and Practicing Socialist Core Values,” organized by the Central Committee of the association. Under the theme “The Entrepreneurial Journey Starting with Just Two Yuan,” he has so far delivered lectures in Chongqing, Guangxi, Xinjiang, and other regions, earning warm welcomes and unanimous praise from Party members and achieving complete success. Currently, within the province’s universities, he has already visited four institutions—the College of Tropical Crops at Yunnan Agricultural University, Xishuangbanna Vocational and Technical College, Kunming University of Science and Technology, and Yunnan Normal University—to deliver these lectures.
