An Extraordinary Person in an Ordinary Role — A Profile of He Xian’an, a Delivery Driver at the North Road Store
Anyone who has visited the North Road outlet of the Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Spring Water Company’s Jinghong Branch is sure to remember one particular individual: a slender man in a slightly oversized work uniform, always carrying two mobile phones in his bag, with quick, energetic strides and perpetually on the move. Ask who he is, and the staff there will tell you without hesitation: He is He Xian’an, the fastest and most reliable water delivery driver at the North Road outlet.

Every trade has its masters, and excellence can be found in every field! All water delivery drivers who work or intern at the North Road branch learn about bottled water from him. He says, “Don’t underestimate delivery—it may seem simple, but to do it well, you have to put your heart into it.” As a result, in his delivery area, he can accurately recall each customer’s address, the specific brand of water they use, and their typical water consumption cycle, making him like a living database. His deep understanding of customers stems from treating their needs as his own. He often remarks, “In the end, for customers, it doesn’t really matter which company’s water they choose—what matters is fast, reliable delivery. Only then will they keep buying our water.” Faced with fierce competition in Jinghong’s urban area—more than 20 competing water suppliers and over a hundred local distributors—he not only adheres strictly to the company’s service standards but also turns passive service into proactive service. He routinely carries two or three extra water barrels on his motorcycle, proactively helping customers replace water that’s nearly empty. In his spare time, his favorite pastime is studying city maps at the store to identify the fastest delivery routes, or exchanging service tips with veteran liquefied-gas delivery drivers at other stores. To ensure he receives delivery notifications from stores promptly, he keeps two phones in his jacket pocket at all times—one for contacting family and friends, and the other dedicated solely to communicating with stores. He explains that he fears nothing more than delaying a customer’s water supply. As a result, every customer he serves praises him as the fastest and best-delivering driver around!
Yet when it comes to his own family, his service is the poorest of all. During the 2015 Lantern Festival, his daughter-in-law’s grandfather passed away suddenly. She asked him to take two days off to attend the funeral, and both the store manager and his colleagues urged him to rest and spend time with her—after all, he hadn’t taken a single day off throughout the entire Spring Festival holiday, and the company leadership would surely approve. But he replied, “Right now it’s peak festival season, customer water demand is high, and the road in front of the store is under construction, making deliveries extremely difficult. If I take more time off, our customers won’t have access to water in a timely manner.” That day, he delivered 90 barrels of water, working straight through until 10 p.m.—and for a full week, his wife didn’t say a single word to him. This is He Xian’an, a water delivery driver at the Beilu branch of Yexiangquan. As a frontline employee of Yexiangquan, he consistently puts the company’s service philosophy—“starting with customer needs and ending with customer satisfaction”—into practice through his actions. His dedication reflects the deep passion he has for his work as an ordinary Yexiangquan delivery driver, and through his example, he shows us that even an unremarkable job can be filled with extraordinary character.
